The Italian heritage is very big in the Gallup region. Many families that migrated from Italy came here to start businesses and many are still going strong. My grandfather opened up a small shoe shop downtown Gallup (City Electric Shoe Shop) and it is still in the family but has tripled in size. Other Italian owned businesses in the Gallup area include California Supermarkets, Holman's Jewelry, Dominic's Downtown Café, Th, The Rocket Café just to name a few.
The local Italian Lodge is ever growing and annually has events for the Italian community. The lodge sponsors a Christmas party, spaghetti cook off, Prince Luigi Picnic and many other events.
