The Philippines

The Philippine Community of Gallup is exhibiting and entertaining at El Morro Theater, 25 September 2004, as part of the Gallup Heritage Day.

"All Filipino/Americans presently residing in Gallup or neighboring areas (Tohatchi, Window Rock, Zuni, Grants, etc. ), should contact Nenette Boucher at 506 Dani Circle, Gallup, NM, Telephone (505) 863-8077 between 5:00 - 9:00 PM or at Church Rock Academy, Counselor, at (505) 721-1425 between 7:30 AM and 3:00 PM, about the annual Christmas dinner party, if your name is not on her list. "

I have found out a few interesting pieces of info regarding the Filipino community in Gallup. There isn't a whole lot of info out there, but considering the last census counted 62 people of Filipino descent in the area, it is not that surprising. I bet you didn't know that in 1944, the army would bus in Filipino soldiers and their white girlfriends to get married in Gallup on the "Honeymoon Express" because bi-racial marriage wasn't allowed in California. Two helpful websites for students: www.thefilipino.com/...info for the Filipino community here and abroad. And www.militarymuseu.org/Filipino.html.
Geoff lived in the Phillipines for a few months and has hung out with one local Filipino family that lives in Chuska. From his experience at a few gatherings, it is Filipino health care workers and teachers who move to Gallup to work and send money home.

We appreciate having one Filipino student at Tohatchi high...it adds a needed bit of diversity.

Filipinos love to sing and dance. We even have "Dancing in the Park" which is held at an open plaza from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Many people including tourists want to watch and sometimes join. We invite a live band team and the Filipino singers are really good. Several dance instructors are also present to dance with the oldies during ballroom dancing. It is really very exciting. Magandang umaga sa iyo!

According to Nenette Boucher, in September, 2004, there are 96 Filipinos (in Gallup), including children. Many of the Filipinos are married to non-Filipinos, which make their children a mixture of races.

You can contact me if any school wishes to have a dance presentation of Philippine folk dances.

The Pacific Educator is published three times a year and contains news and articles from the five Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) program areas (Mathematics and Science, Pacific Center, PR*TEC, PRELSTAR, and the Regional Educational Laboratory). Each issue focuses on a topic of interest to Pacific educators in Hawaii and the U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands served by PREL. The theme for the October issue of the Pacific Educator is “English Language Learners”. Here is the issue:
